Two weeks to go for the spring book study group! I hope that you are learning new things and getting lots of ideas for your campus/department. The summer book study group will be joining the blog next week, so it will be interesting to read what others have to say about HHJ's book. This week you only have questions from one chapter, but it is a good one written by Allen November.
Chapter11:
1. How is the "disruptive" force of technologies and digital tools transforming teaching and learning?
2. How do the professionals in our school perceive this force? Explore the different attitudes by professional level and experience.
3. How can we develop new roles for professionals in our school setting so that we all become more comfortable and empowered?
4. How can our students make rigorous and meaningful contributions to the school and to their own education?

I really enjoyed the Student as Contributor section of this chapter. I can see how something as simple as Researchers could help our students with technology. Our problem so far has been that technology has not fit into what we are teaching, but this simple idea links what we are doing to the research you can do on the internet. What a great way to also help students understand how to search effectively. I have just signed up 20 of my teachers to complete a book study over this book this summer, and I think they will get a lot out of this chapter. I hope they see this as meaningful ways to bring technology into the classroom and imbed it into our curriculum. Hopefully with 20 teachers at least reading about this type of thing, we can begin to see a change at our school.
You are right on target, April. I remember that earlier in the book study you mentioned the importance of using technology to enhance the content, not as just another "add-on". I am pleased that the book study has given you some simple ways in which you can lead your staff in this direction. 20 teachers is a significant number of your staff, so I have no doubt that you will see significant meaningful changes in teaching and learning at NRE.
This chapter offers the most simple to do ideas for any level, any subject, and BISD has the tools available. Responsibility for learning can shift to the students by making them the researchers, scribes, contributors, coordinators, and collaborators. We need to both challenge and empower the students to accomplish these tasks. By putting to use the some of the devices that are already on campus or allowing students to use personal devices we can "raise the level of engagement and provide more depth and rigor to the curriculum..."
